KUALA LUMPUR: Transport equipment and electrical and electronic (E&E) products drove Malaysia’s manufacturing sales higher by 4.5% to RM124.60bil in December. On a monthly basis, the sales value rose by 3.9% from November, according to the Statistics Department report on Monday. Chief Statistician Datuk Seri Dr Mohd Uzir Mahidin said the year-on-year increase in December 2020 was driven by transport equipment & other manufactures products (20.5%); food, beverages & tobacco products (7.9%) and E&E (4.2%). He also said the total employees engaged in the manufacturing sector in December 2020 fell by 2% to 2,199,195 persons from 2,243,788 persons a year ago. Salaries & wages paid totalled RM7.770bil, down by 0.8% or RM59.70mil in December 2020 from a year ago. Sales value per employee rose by 6.7% to RM56,644 from a year ago. The average salaries & wages per employee was RM3,533 in December 2020. In the fourth quarter of 2020, the sales value of the manufacturing sector rose by 3% to RM366.40bil from a year ago. The increase was driven by transport equipment & other manufactures products (15.0%); food, beverages & tobacco products (9%) and E&E (4.3%). However, the number of employees and salaries & wages dropped by 2% and 1.2% respectively in 4Q of 2020. Overall, for 2020, the sales value of the manufacturing sector fell by 2.1% to RM1,346.6bil from 2019. The number of employees engaged during the period fell by 2% to 2,199,195 persons while salaries & wages paid fell by 1.1% to RM87.2bil. Sales value per employee declined by 0.2% to RM612,324.
