Warisan is reportedly in talks with the Malaysian United Democratic Alliance (Muda) about a potential tie-up ahead of the 15th general election (GE15).
According to The Malaysian Insight, the discussions include a plan for Muda to help the Sabah-based party to expand into Peninsular Malaysia.
The Registrar of Societies has previously turned down Muda’s bid to register as a political party.
Muda co-founder Mutalib Uthman (above) was quoted as saying that online video calls with Warisan’s top leaders were held this week.
“We are in discussion with Warisan to help the party become a national party and spread its wings to Peninsular Malaysia.
“We don’t have a formal agreement yet, just initial discussions for us to find common ground to work together.
“There may be issues that we can discuss and fight for together,” he told the news portal.
According to Mutalib, Muda president Syed Saddiq Syed Abdul Rahman and Warisan president Shafie Apdal did not personally join the initial discussions.
He also said it was Muda that reached out to Warisan.
If it does not get registered in time for GE15, Muda’s election candidates will need to contest under an existing political party’s logo.
Last December, Warisan Youth chief Mohd Azis Jamman disclosed that the party harboured plans to expand into West Malaysia to become a full-fledged national party.
Shafie has been positioning himself as a national leader, saying Malaysia would benefit from an East Malaysian opposition chief but not explicitly offering himself for the role.
